ANTIGO, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Antigo prom shooting investigation is now in the hands of the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Bureau of Criminal Investigations. Antigo Police Chief Eric Roller says that is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting incident. "The main role with DOJ is to fully investigate this officer involved shooting. Because it was a quick, isolated event, they can also investigate the whole incident that evening, so by doing that, they're looking at everything thoroughly to make sure that we did everything that we could have done, and everybody acted properly."
The DOJ will look into all things surrounding the incident. Roller could not release many details during a press conference Monday, saying they do not yet know what gunman Jakob Wagner's motive was. They did confirm the 18-year-old gunman used a rifle and arrived at the school on a bicycle.
When gunshots rang out Saturday night at the Antigo High School prom, the response from police was almost instant. Roller says officers were already in the school parking lot, and heard the gunshots, so there were able to respond in seconds. "It was very close proximity. It was in the front of the school and the officers were right there in the parking lot."
There were two Antigo officers at the school patrolling the parking lot at the time. Roller says they received rapid assistance from many other agencies, including police from Wausau, Merrill, Medford, Tomahawk, Wausau, and Rhinelander, plus deputies from Lincoln, Oneida, Marathon, and Langlade counties.
Antigo Principal Tom Zamzow says since the shootings, they have received support from all over. "We would be remiss if we did not express our appreciation for the outpouring of support from every corner of the country."
Counselors were at the school Monday, and Zamzow says many neighboring districts have offered their resources to assist the Antigo staff and students.
