UNDATED (WTAQ) - U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus confirmed Thursday that a future littoral combat ship will be named for Marinette.
During an announcement, Mabus said that littoral combat ships 25 and 26 in the fleet will be named for the cities in which they are built, Marinette and Mobile, Alabama.
Both cities split the construction of the ships. Fincantieri Marinette Marine builds Freedom-variant LCS, while Independence-variant LCS is built at Austal USA in Alabama.
The USS Marinette is scheduled to be finished and delivered to the Navy in 2020, according to Lockheed Martin, which oversees LCS construction at Fincantieri Marinette Marine. The future USS Marinette is the first ship with that name, while the future USS Mobile will be the 5th ship to bear that name.
