Wear purple for domestic violence awareness

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Amy Carter with Children's Inn says Minnehaha County Sheriff's Deputies and Sioux Falls Police last year responded to over 1,500 domestic assault calls.

Carter says in 2014, 35% of the murders in South Dakota were the result of domestic violence.

To raise awareness of domestic violence you're asked to wear a purple ribbon in October.

According to the South Dakota Coalition Ending Domestic and Sexual Violence, abuse includes beatings, pushing, hair pulling, name calling, killing pets, threats, child abuse, rape, food thrown in your face and murder.

In Sioux Falls Domestic Violence Programs are available at The Compass Center, Children's Inn, South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault and My Sister's Friend House.
