STANDING ROCK RESERVATION (KFGO) - The Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council has voted 8-to-5 to encourage the relocation of the Dakota Access Pipeline protest encampment off U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land in Morton County and onto tribal land at Cannonball, North Dakota.
The pipeline project has led to a growing protest at the camp site. Some estimates have placed the number of protesters on site at 4,000 or more at times. The Standing Rock Tribe, which has attracted international support, fears the pipeline could leak and contaminate their water supply and destroy ancient sacred sites.
The protest has also led to more than 100 arrests and a large presence of law enforcement officers from across the region who dealt with sometimes violent confrontations and vandalism by protesters.
