MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network) - U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin says FBI Director James Comey is a man of integrity who misjudged the situation, when he indicated new emails may have been found in an investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server when she was Secretary of State.
“I believe that Director Comey made an error in judgement,” Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) said, during a stop Tuesday morning at a coffee shop on the UW-Madison campus.
Comey has been under fire after he sent a letter to members of Congress last week, in which he said additional emails that may be connected to the Clinton probe were found during the course of another investigation.
The emails were found on a computer that was jointly used by Clinton aide Huma Abadein and her estranged husband, Anthony Weiner.
The FBI ended its investigation into whether Clinton kept classified information on a private email server earlier this year, after determining no criminal charges were warranted. Republicans seized on the letter as an indication that the FBI was reopening its investigation.
Critics contend the letter, released less than two weeks before Clinton faces Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, could influence the outcome of the election. Clinton’s campaign has called on Comey to provide more details about the situation to the American people.
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Russ Feingold, also appearing with Baldwin at an early voting event, backed up that assertion.
“It’s incumbent on the FBI to provide as much information as they can because of the potential impact this can have on the presidential election.”
