DETROIT (WKZO-AM) -- A Wayne State University police officer with southwest Michigan ties is dead after being shot in the head while on duty.
The shooting occurred while 29-year-old Collin Rose was investigating possible vehicle break-ins near the school's Detroit campus on Tuesday.
Police Chief Anthony Holt says 29-year-old suspect Deangelo Davis is in custody.
"We have had previous contact several years ago with this subject," Holt said. "It was assaultive-type crime against police officers."
Davis was detained late Tuesday.
Rose, who was engaged to be married next year, attended Gull Lake High School and Ferris State University. He began his police career in Richland.
He died Wednesday night after being released from surgery.
Gov. Rick Snyder released a statement after Rose's death:
"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Officer Collin Rose and my thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and coworkers during this tragic time," Snyder said. "Officer Rose was well-respected by fellow law enforcement officers and the community for his work and his commitment to serving others. May he rest in peace knowing that Michiganders are collectively mourning his loss and that we will support his family, friends and colleagues to the best of our ability while they grieve."
Attorney General Bill Schuette also issued condolances late Wednesday.
