Pre-trial hearing for suspected mass murderer

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO-AM) -- It looks like it will be beyond the first anniversary of the mass shooting in Kalamazoo before Uber driver Jason Dalton will go on trial.

During a closed status conference Friday, the defense told Judge Alexander Lipsey that they plan to hire their own psychologist to examine Dalton as they prepare for an insanity defense.

They also made a motion to suppress some of the comments Dalton made to detectives. Dalton reportedly claimed during interviews with detectives that a demon in his Uber App forced him to shoot 8 people, killing six.

Judge Lipsey wants the name of the psychologist by Christmas.

A defense brief on the suppression motion is due in mid-January 2017 and the prosecution’s response is due two weeks later.

A hearing has been set for February 10, 2017 to sort it all out, and a trial date will be set after that.

It was February 20, 2016 that Dalton allegedly went on his shooting spree.
