(Reuters) - Three federal law enforcement officers were wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect at a motel in Topeka, Kansas, authorities said on Sunday.

A joint fugitive task force that included the U.S. Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement attempted to arrest a suspect at the Country Club Motel in Topeka around 10 p.m. on Saturday, according to Amy McCarter, a spokeswoman for the Topeka Police Department.

Two deputy U.S. marshals and an FBI agent suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the gun battle. A fire also started at the motel during the exchange, McCarter said.

Authorities have not disclosed the name of the suspect. McCarter and a spokeswoman for the U.S. Marshals Service said the status of the suspect was still unknown due to the fire, which burned throughout much of the night.

One of the marshals has already been released from the hospital, while the other is stable.

McCarter said a fourth officer from a local agency may also have been hurt during the confrontation, but she did not have any further details.
