UPDATE-Sunday Evening:
ANTIGO, Wis. -- The shooter, Jakob E. Wagner, 18, has died from injuries after being shot by police. He had been transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital before dying around 1 a.m. Sunday. Wagner was a 2015 graduate of Antigo High School.
His targets were a female student who was released from Aspirus Langlade Hospital after being treated. The other student is a male who underwent surgery for his wounds and is expected to make a full recovery. No connection has been made between Wagner and the targets.
A parent of a student who was witness to the incident said it was shocking.
“When you get that phone call, first of all the shock, the denial, this isn’t happening and then why is this happening. How did this happen? And then the emotions take over. First you’re terrified, then you’re angry, very angry, like why? Then the next emotion is “Please God let everyone be alright, and be there with the families, even the family of the shooter. This isn’t going to be easy for anybody. Just hope the community pulls itself back together and move on.”
Unconfirmed reports indicate Wagner arrived alone on a bicycle, with a rifle over his shoulder. A press release from the Antigo Police Department says the unnamed officer's immediate response prevented further injuries and possible casualties. The shooter never gained access to the building.
According to police reports, a search warrant has been executed at the shooter’s residence. The school went on lock down and parents were called to pick up their children.
The Antigo School District will provide counseling services will be available in all schools on Monday, for students and staff. Any parent who wishes to keep their child out of school for the day should contact the school to have the abscense excused.
