HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - A former U.S. Representative is one of five Michigan co-chairs of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's campaign.
Pete Hoekstra who was first elected to represent Michigan's 2nd Congressional District in 1993 is also the former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.
Other Republicans in office in West Michigan are St. Joseph Congressman Fred Upton who says he is staying in his own lane and made national news when he said he will not endorse Trump. Zeeland Congressman Bill Huizenga says he will vote for the candidate of his party, but has yet to endorse Trump.
Hoekstra says he doesn't have to defend himself in supporting Trump and at the end of the day it's not like we've got an alternative.
"One of these two individuals is going to be President of the United States. Everybody is going to be going to the polls, well maybe not. Some will stay home, but eveyone that goes to the polls is going to have to vote for one of those two choices. Sure there are other people on the ballot, but none of these other people are going to have a shot at being President. It's not about defending myself. I feel very comfortable defending the platform that Donald Trump has put out there." Hokestra told WHTC News.
Hoekstra lost in the Senate race to Democrat Debbie Stabenow in 2012 and is now serving as the Shillman Senior fellow with the Investigative Project on Terrorism.
